As the former Director of the National Coordination Office for Information Technology Research and Development with the Executive Office of the President, Dr. Nelson coordinated planning, budget, execution, and assessment activities for federally-funded fundamental research in networking and information technology, a program that included more than a dozen federal agencies and an annual budget of more than $2 billion.
Prior to joining the White House, Dr. Nelson was Deputy Chief Information Officer of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), where he functioned as Chief Information Security Officer, with additional responsibilities in scientific computing and enterprise architecture. In this position he developed NASA's cyber security program and helped NASA to earn one of the highest grades in the early years of the Government Information Systems Reform Act. Dr. Nelson was previously Associate Director of the Office of Energy Research in the Department of Energy. He served as Chief of Staff for Energy Research and directed the Office of Computational and Technology Research.
Dr. Nelson twice received the President's Rank Award for superior sustained managerial performance and the Department of Energy's Meritorious Service Award. He received his A.B. cum laude from Harvard University and both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.
